Ever wonder, why more people search for information on Google than Yahoo? It’s the layout and spacing. People are more likely to browse, when they don’t feel visually overwhelmed. From the revolving headlines, ads and images, Yahoo’s home page exemplifies information overload. And, despite the fact that end users can customize page preferences, who really wants to invest that much time configuring a major search engine’s cluttered home page?
Google is a different story. After keywords are queried on Google, eyes are naturally drawn to the results. Google reflects the importance of balancing white space with the focal point.
Content and images have space issues. They can be in close proximity. When content and images touch or overlap, they begin to feel upstaged or entrapped in a bad marriage. In the eye of the beholder, overlapping content and images suggest amateur web design.
As for the content, keep lines close enough to encourage your audience to read more, without being sidetracked by the wrong line or distracted by inadequate “leading” (line spacing).
