These days it’s hard to research information on the Internet without feeling empowered to do-it-yourself (DIY). Although DIY works around the home, it’s not recommended for the company Web site.
In an effort to conserve the marketing budget, certain companies try their hand at web design. With the availability of programs such as Word Press, Web site templates, coupled with a modicum of HTML design knowledge, some organizations believe the do-it-yourself Web site is an effective way to save on design costs. In reality cutting corners, ends up costing more than it’s worth.
Here’s why:
Most Web site templates are pre-constructed with “fixed layout” qualities. These fixed parameters are a visual impairment for many site visitors. Generally, Web sites are comprised of a navigation bar, images/artwork and between one to three columns. From browser-to-browser, the configuration appears differently. As a result, while one visitor may experience your site without any problems, the page layout may appear different to the next guest.
Even if your site visitors use the same operating system, screen size varies. Then, there’s the issue that the screen is the appropriate size, but the layout takes up the entire screen. Some visitors maybe turned off by full-blown layout or Web pages that fill up the entire screen. Moreover, there are those readers, who use an iPhone, SmartPhone or BlackBerry or other handheld devices to access your site.
Moral of the story: It is better to have your site professionally designed to accommodate all visitors — than risk alienating your readers and the potential of losing a prospective customer or new client.
